How can I ensure responsible and appropriate use of the internet?
In order to ensure responsible and appropriate use of the internet, guidelines would DEFINITELY have to be in place. Teenagers are notoriously and increasingly MEAN to one another and the internet is the new medium of choice for bullies. In order to prevent abuse of others in responding to posts and discussions, guidelines should be created as a part of the start of year documents for classroom norms and expectations. A contract would probably work best. Here, you can clearly outline what is required and expected of students using internet resources, forums and chats. SIGNATURES are always a good idea. Therefore when problems arise, you have a reference to note.
How can I use the internet to support my teaching and student learning?
The internet is a very useful tool for enhancing student learning. In the past, due to limited availability of the internet for my students, I had primarily used the internet as a research and support tool to create and plan my lessons. Now, with the availability of computers and active resources (activboard, etc.) the internet has become more accessible to me as a tool for facilitating learning. Creating online course content for students, such as chat, and forums for students to present and share original ideas is very exciting. Recently, using a personal class website, I used this as a platform for students to submit extra credit assignments. Since writing is a critical area of concern for my students, I created a forum with prompts for students to create authentic responses. In the future, I hope to use this format for students to create journal entries as well as short assessments for understanding of content.
